The Coordination Council was created by the decree of the Government of Georgia based on the Law of Georgia in the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. Its purpose is to support the establishment, operation, and development of the NSDI.
During the inter-agency meeting, the participants discussed the four-year NSDI Development Strategy, the one-year Action Plan, and draft versions of nine sectoral regulations. The documents, which will be submitted to the Government of Georgia for approval, were prepared by the NSDI coordinator, the National Agency of Public Registry (NAPR) under the Ministry of Justice, in close cooperation with the member authorities of the Council.
Developed with reference to international best practices, the regulations will establish common standards for the production, management, and sharing of spatial data. This will enable data produced by different government agencies to be interoperable, helping to reduce duplication and save time and resources. The data will also be aligned with the European Union’s Infrastructure for Spatial Information (INSPIRE) and will be easily shared through the National Geoportal.
The reform aims to introduce modern standards for the management and sharing of spatial data. As part of this process, NAPR, with the support of the World Bank under the Georgia Resilient Agriculture, Irrigation, and Land Project (GRAIL), has developed the first multifunctional national geoportal, NSDI.GOV.GE. More than 160 metadata from around 30 government authorities are already publicly available through the National Geoportal.
Access to reliable geospatial data through the geoportal supports informed decision-making across both the public and private sectors. It facilitates infrastructure planning and business activities, while also supporting timely and effective responses to crisis situations.
